M11 Class Notes on ACP requirement for MA348 by Frank Syrek The ACP requirements for an ACP course are 30 pages of typed, edited and resubmitted pages. The focus for this course is the ability to write mathematics and the ability to read math accurately in lessons (filecards) and on exams. How the requirement is interpreted for this course: =================================================== 15 page term paper typed in LaTeX, submit all homework as a LaTeX pdf, oral expression (seminars), and an essay on the final. For the final prepare for writing the essay out by hand and make sure that it is legible. Help with LaTeX: =================================================== Know the difference between citations, footnotes and a bibliography. With the term paper use citations and their references at the end (see the begin{thebibliography} environment in Advice) instead of footnotes. Citations are a subset of the bibliography and every element of the references section should be cited at least once in the essay. In the future if you are ever using LaTeX to coauthor an essay it is very useful to use marginal notes to edit the essay neatly. Footnotes should be used for explanation. Http citations or web citations are ephemeral or "soft". If a server crashes a website can become inaccessible, therefore book and journal citations are very useful. When citing a source use the \cite{} environment in LaTeX. When inserting pictures use the figure environment because it guarantees that the the picture and the caption will be on the same page. The caption should explain the picture well enough so that the reader would consult the text only if she needs more information. When using an online .tex compiler such as texWins or ShareLaTeX, you must upload the images to the compiler first before they are used in the document to the compiler. (To test just the text, comment out lines for the figures temporarily.} There followed a lengthy demonstration of texWins for these purposes. See additional instruction in Advice, including a video on using texWins. Notes on the Term Paper: =================================================== Start using a portfolio to collect all drafts so that there are no problems deciding which drafts need to be turned each time. It can be a 3 hole punch soft cover portfolio and have all editions of your term paper in the portfolio. The final paper is due week 13. With the final submission, but not before the, all grammar, spelling, format, math, factual errors will negatively impact the papers grade.
